Bunions (Hallux Valgus Abducto)

Definition

A bunion is an enlargement of the joint at the side of the big toe. The big toe is bent inwards and a bony lump forms on the outside. Over time the lump becomes larger and the bunion can become painful. Arthritis and stiffness can eventually develop. Callous and corns may develop on the bunion.

What causes bunions?

Apart from being often heriditary, bunions are usually a result of faulty foot mechanics - in particular excess pronation (rolling inwards of the foot). Also, wearing footwear that is too tight whereby the toes are squeezed together may be a contributing factor.

Summary:

Definition: bunion = enlargement of the big toe joint

Symtoms: redness and pain on the outside of the big toe

Causes: mostly heriditary, but over-pronation can be a contrbuting factor, as well as tight footwear

Treatment: orthotics to prevent bunion from further developing, loose footwear

Treatment of bunions (in women's fashion shoes)

Footlogics 'Catwalk' orthotic insoles can help prevent the formation of bunions by restoring our normal foot function and controlling excess pronation.

In addition, the metatarsal support will help reduce pressure and friction, placed on the big toe joint, in turn providing relief from bunion pain.

Treatment of Bunions (normal, flat shoes)

However, Bunions are not just limited to women wearing high heels. They can also develop in men (wearing normal flat footwear). To ease bunions and help prevent further development, wearing Footlogics Comfort orthotics can greatly assist.

Furthermore, make sure that your shoes have a roomy toe box when you’re going to be on your feet a lot. If you have any pressure from your shoe on the bunion, or if your bunion is red and inflammed on the outside, then you should have a pocket stretched into your shoe to accommodate.
